Do you really know what a p value is?

Here's a quiz. I compare the number of people who get the disease after having my vaccine to those who got the disease after a placebo. Fewer get sick after the vaccine; p = 0.05. This means:

A. There is only a 1 in 20 chance that the vaccine does not work.

B. I am 95% confident that the vaccine works.

C. I have rejected the null hypothesis: the vaccine works.

D. It is 95% probable that the vaccine works.

E. The vaccine works and is around 5% effective.

Question

I'm all for studying and working hard to the point of actually inducing brain damage, but this ethics article is pretty persuasive. I used to scoff at people who complained about assignments or work load but as the boards are approaching I'm starting to agree. There is a huge difference between exposing students to information and requiring write-ups and projects that are basically the med-school version of administrative paperwork. For the past 3 years we’ve been running an experiment in social networking between 2 classes: IMMU 7630 here at CU, a graduate course in human immunology, and PSIO 495 at University of Arizona, an undergraduate colloquium on inflammation.
